Nepali Tourism 2019: Foreign Arrivals to Chitwan Shrink

Despite hefty spending by the Nepali government and private bodies for tourism promotion, the influx of foreign tourists at Chitwan National Park (CNP) has abated.

According to the CNP Officer, Gopal Ghimire, the number of foreign tourist arrivals at CNP has decreased significantly in the first quarter of FY 2019 when compared to that of FY 2018.

Foreign Arrivals at Chitwan National Park (CNP) in Numbers:

  • 1st Quarter, 2018: 39,436
  • 1st Quarter, 2019: 38,330

However, the number of visitors from Nepal and SAARC countries has proliferated by 26.85 percent. The data shows that the inflow at CNP increased from 54,623 to 69,292 for the aforementioned period.

The park enthralls the visitors with rare wildlife including tigers and rhinos, rowboats and Tharu cultural dance performances.

Chitwan’s Sauraha, Meghauli, Patihani, Madi and Devghat are some other prominent tourist spots that allures foreign visitors every year.

Earlier, on the back of 2015 earthquake and economic blockade imposed by India, the number of tourists had fallen drastically.

So, with the vision to enhance the growth of tourism industry, the government and tourism department of Nepal has proclaimed 2020 as “Visit Nepal 2020“.
