Clash ensues when police raid suspended NC lawmaker Alam’s house

RAUTAHAT: Police and locals of Rajpur Municipality in Rautahat district clashed on Thursday night after police raided the houses of three locals including that of suspended Nepali Congress lawmaker Mohammed Aftab.

A team of police raided the three houses, yesterday, intending to arrest Alam’s brother, Mohammed Mahatab Alam, who has been accused of involvement in Rajpur bomb blast. Police had received a special tip-off that Mahatab has returned home to celebrate Ramadan.

However, family members of Alam and locals resisted the police during their operation and tried to attack police personnel at the site, informed Superintendent of Police (SP) Rabindra Raj Khadka at the District Police Office, Rautahat. The police were forced to blank fire 12-rounds in the air to disperse the crowd and secure the safety of police personnel, claimed SP Khadka.

The police did not find Mahatab as per their tip-off during the raid, informed SP Khadka. “However, we will continue the search,” he added.

Mohammed Mahatab Alam, among others, have been accused of their involvement in the Rajpur bomb blast and have been put in the wanted list.

Mayor of Rajpur Municipality, Sheikh Shakil Akhtar, has denounced the raid claiming that it was done in a “dacoit style” and made a joke of rule of law. According to Mayor Akhtar, police raiding the house during the religious occasion was not in line with the required procedure and demanded action against the police personnel involved in the raid.

He also threatened that the locals will start a step-wise struggle.
